If I were to do a Podcast what questions? If I do this, I will be starting with a list of canned questions. At some point, it may go free form but to start I will need a frame work. So, with that said, I would like to solicit our community. What questions would you like me to ask? Please list 5 of the most important questions you would like me to asks. This is getting fun just thinking about it! |

For me it is interesting in the history of the luthiers. So a brief on the childhood, and how the gradually got into luthier is a good start. Move on to the luthiery business and keep timeframe till the present. Find or ask them beforehand pivotal moments in the luthier world for them and generate question to build off of it. Two or three good moments is a good start to get some questions into that scenario. Also being a luthier based podcast, it would be good to have you and/or the luthier give a tip on a specific technique that they perform with confidence. Maybe it is just a walk through or a position/tool they prefer to use for that specific technique but it's a very important thing in my opinion to have in a podcast for builders, new and old. Keeps motivation. If you would like any more suggestions let me know Lance. -edit sorry I just realized you wanted 5 specific questions. I will try and gather some in the morning. |

What is their theory of bracing and why they brace the way they do. There is a lot of variety within the X brace family. Guild, Martin, Lowden, Larrivee, Sexauer etc. Thin top or thick neckblock ideas weight of headstock effect of weight of back sides Theres 5 |

1. Pre-guitarmaking career/woodworking experience 2. Useful learning experiences for inexperienced guitarmakers 3. Wood selection - happy using wood that isn't a million percent perfect? I always feel like I learn a lot about a builder knowing where they fall on a spectrum between different ideals. To that end I might ask: -lots of builders really enjoy collaborating with players, while some prefer to use building as an expression of their own creativity with very little input... do you prefer to build with a player or style in mind or to your own sense of what you believe is the ideal tone or aesthetic? -what is more satisfying... refining and perfecting a design or exploring a new idea or design? -We can't all have infinite closets full of jigs and fixtures and we all can't be absolute masters of every possible tool and technique... as a practical matter how do you balance flexibility vs repeatability? Are there certain jigs or processes that you feel hinder your flexibility or are there particular processes that just aren't practical to automate that you wish you could? Maybe a better question is whether one finds it more satisfying to master a free form technique or to design a clever jig or process as a means to an end? -Who in the world of lutherie past or present inspires you and why? |

For me, I prefer the looser more conversational style of podcasts. I think I would like to listen to something that is less NPR feeling. I have noticed that anything guitar building related can get that way pretty quick and I start to fall a sleep. Some questions I would like to hear would be, A story about your worst customer(of course no names), What is the most annoying thing about the industry? What are your future plans in guitar making? If you could only have one guitar for the rest of your life, and the guitar cannot be built by you, what brand or specific guitar would you choose? If you could collaborate on one guitar with any maker past or present who would he or she be? |

Lespaul123, I have to agree with you. I think one could not ask every luthier the same 5 questions either. Everyone is so different. I would just like to hear the stories, the background, what the future holds for them and for lutherie, and also some kind of tips time. |

I agree with LesPaul - discussion type podcasts I find more interesting...anyways, I can't list 5 things, but one thing would be if they have any interesting stories relating to lutherie. I'd imagine some of these guys who've been doing this for 15+ years have one or two really cool stories from along the way. |

I finally have some decent input, I think.... Rather than just a single episode for each builder, I think it would be far more valuable to have episodes dedicated to certain topics, during which you can speak to several people. and if they don't mind, they can become regular contributors. You can choose your guests based on where their specialty lies. Get Skype working properly and it opens up lots of options for multiple (international!!!) guests. I always find it interesting when a chat show has multiple guests... The guests start asking each other questions and the listener gets much more out of it and the interviewer has less work to do. More like the Graham Norton show than Jonathan Ross. It becomes a much more natural discussion. It also helps to keep things interesting and allows for more natural humour (and even arguments). This is a radio show but a good model for a podcast in a lot of ways, I think. It's called "The Infinite Monkey Cage" and it's all about science. Quite a fun idea they have is to have an "interested idiot" involved in the discussion to ask the "stupid questions". You can find all episodes here, http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/timc. And here's an article about recording podcasts using Skype. http://www.macworld.com/article/1162062 ... _tips.html I reckon 30 minutes episodes are plenty to begin with. If you follow the advice in that article, you'll have enough to deal with even at that length! I imagine you'd want to test the procedure with someone local before trying multiple overseas guests. Also, rather than having to have listeners send in questions, you can ask contributors to choose questions they'd like to answer from current posts and threads on the forum.
